Biotechnology: Parts of the Thesis

Theses in Biotechnology are organized into front matter, the body, and end matter. Sections listed below that are not indicated as optional must be included in your thesis.

  • Exception: theses that contain tables or figures

For this, either a list of tables or a list of figures will be included in the front matter.

Order for the front matter of your thesis:

  • Title page (see example in Templates)
  • Blank page or copyright page
  • Abstract
  • Author’s biographical sketch written in third person (optional)
  • Dedication (optional)
  • Acknowledgements (optional)
  • Table of Contents
  • List of Tables
  • List of Figures

Front matter pagination

Lower case Roman numerals indicated at the bottom-center of pages begin after the abstract and end on the last page of list of figures. For example, if your thesis has a two-page abstract and you wish to include a biographical sketch, the first numeral displayed will be “v” on the bottom-center of your biosketch page.

Chapter titles for the body of your thesis:

  • Chapter I: Introduction
  • Chapter II: Materials and Methods or Research Methods
  • Chapter III: Results
  • Chapter IV: Discussion

Note: There is flexibility in selection of chapter titles for case studies.

Order for the end matter of your thesis:

  • Appendices (optional)
  • References (in APA format)

End matter pagination

Arithmetic numbers (i.e. Hindu-Arabic starting with "1") indicated at the bottom-center of pages start on the first page of Chapter I and end on the last page of references.
