Biotechnology: Testing Research Hypotheses

For most thesis projects in the Biotechnology field - and some in the Bioengineering and Nanotechnology fields - hypotheses are tested in a laboratory as part of an experimental study.

After the experimental results have been analyzed, your hypothesis will have been supported or disproved.

  • It is crucial that you design an experiment that has the appropriate variables, including controls and the necessary number of replicates

Many thesis projects in the Bioinformatics field involve computational tool development.

  • For projects in this field that don’t involve tool development, students may develop and test hypotheses based on the analysis of publicly available datasets
