Social Sciences: Using Human Subjects in Research (IRB)

If you are conducting human subjects research in Social Sciences, Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) policy requires you to have a Principal Investigator (PI)-eligible faculty member sponsor your project.

  • For the ALM thesis, that means a faculty person with a ladder teaching appointment at the level of senior lecturer or above

Once you have a Thesis Director, s/he can sponsor your research when you submit your research project for review by the Committee on the Use of Human Subjects of the University-area Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Harvard University.

  • All Social Science proposals should contain the following statement in the Research Methods section:

“All applicable protocols and policies of Harvard University’s Institutional Review Board (http://cuhs.harvard.edu/) will be complied with in this proposed thesis research.”
